In September 1978, to promote their first single, Bicycle Race /Fat Bottom Girls, the band Queen staged a bike race at Wimbledon Stadium featuring 65 naked woman on rented bikes. The picture was included as a poster in the UK release the Jazz Album (1978). Afterwards, Queen was ordered by the renter to pay for 65 new bicycle seats because, it was claimed, the bikes had been used “inappropriately” during the shoot.

The real Lord of the FlIes. In 1965, 6 bored Tongan school boys, aged 13 to 15 years, “borrowed” a fishing boat and set to sea for an adventure. During a storm they were washed up on the deserted island of Ata where they were marooned for 15 months. They were eventually rescued by an Australian sea captain and his crew.

During the time that they were marooned the boys managed to cooperate and establish a functioning and successful community – unlike the grim circumstances in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, released in 1951.

Phryne before the Areopagus. Painted by Jean-Leon Gerome in 1861 (Public Domain).

Phryne was a famed courtesan in ancient Athens, born about 371 BCE and extraordinarily beautiful. She was prosecuted on a capital charge (possibly “impiety”) and brought before the court where she was defended by one of her lovers, the orator Hypereides.

During the trial Hypereides dramatically tore off Phryne’s robes to show the judges her beautiful breasts, making the point that only a God could sculpt a body so perfect and that executing or imprisoning her would be blasphemous and disrespectful to the Gods. Phryne was subsequently acquitted and freed.
