In 1977, at age 26, Robyn Davidson left from outside Alice Springs to walk west to the Indian Ocean, accompanied by four camels and a dog. After 9 months and 2,835 kilometres she finished the trek at Hamelin Pool, north of Geralton, WA. Photo by Rick Smolan (see below).
In 1989, Robyn Davidson wrote an account of her travels (“Tracks”) and in 2013 her story was made into a major movie. Rick Smolan accompanied Robyn on certain stages to photograph her journey for National Geographic. The legendary Bettie Page, a famous American pin up girl and actor from the 50’s. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, she said of modelling nude “I never thought it was shameful. I felt normal. Lady Elliot lighthouse. Lady Elliot Island is on the extreme SE tip of the Great Barrier Reef and about 40 nautical miles NE of Bundaberg, Queensland. it was built in1863 with a timber frame, clad with iron plates. It was decommissioned in 1995 in favour of a fully-automated light on a steel tower nearby.

Norman Lindsay (1879 – 1969) was one of Australia’s most prominent artists. His works were both lauded and condemned, and some were deemed to be blasphemous. He is posing here with Rose Soady. Rose (1885 – 1978), who was his model and business manager, and who later became his second wife.

The movie Sirens was released in 1994, based loosely on Norman Lindsay’s life. With interwoven themes of religion and sexual awakening it starred Portia De Rossi (left) as a maid and Elle McPherson (centre) and Katie Fischer (right) as Lindsay’s nude models. Sam Neil starred as Lindsay.

Cape Leeuwin lighthouse in Western Australia. Cape Leeuwin is the most south-west point of the Australian mainland and the point where the Indian Ocean (on the right) and the Southern Ocean (on the left) meet. The lighthouse is the tallest on the mainland at 39 metres (128 feet). It flashes a white light every 7.5 seconds. Source: margaretriver.com.
