February 1915 and Endurance, the ship from Ernest Shackleton’s 1914-1917 expedition to Antarctica is trapped by ice in the Weddell Sea. The ship was slowly crushed and it finally sank on 21 November 1915.

However, with the loss of the Endurance, Shackleton pulled of a remarkable rescue of all the 27 other sailors and scientists aboard by sailing with a small crew 750 miles across open ocean for help from Stromness whaling station on the island of South Georgia. The photograph was probably taken by the Australian photographer on board, Frank Hurley. Source: pinterest.com.
