The Allegory of Hearing, painted in 1618 by Jan Brueghel the elder (collaborating with Peter Reubens, for the figures). Venus plays the lyre and sings, accompanied by cupid. Many other musical instruments and song birds are included in the painting, including a sulphur-crested cockatoo at Venus’ right shoulder. How did a bird native to Australia get to be included in a Flemish/Dutch painting in the early 1600’s?
Original painting held at Museo del Prado, Madrid.
