In 1965, 6 bored Tongan school boys, aged 13 to 15 years, “borrowed” a fishing boat and set to sea for an adventure. During a storm they were washed up on the deserted island of Ata where they were marooned for 15 months. They were eventually rescued by an Australian sea captain and his crew.
During the time that they were marooned the boys managed to cooperate and establish a functioning and successful community – unlike the grim circumstances in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, released in 1951.
