Cape Naturaliste lighthouse in Western Australia on the cape named by French explorer and cartographer Nicolas Baudin (1754-1803) after the flagship of his small two-ship expedition fleet. Baudin visited and mapped this area of the coast of “New Holland” in May 1801 at the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The 19 metre sandstone light tower sits atop a 100 metre cliff. The lighthouse was completed in 1903, and first lit in April 1904, using whale oil initially and then vaporised kerosene. It was connected to mains electricity in 1978. At night the light flashes a white light twice every 10 seconds.

About 300 years before Jesus was born the Greek philosophers were grappling with the question of why there is evil and suffering in the world. Why would a loving and all-powerful god allow evil and agony to continue? Read Professor Bart Ehrman on suffering, in ehrmanblog.org. Epicurus was born on the Greek island of Samos to Athenian parents in 341 BCE and he died in 270 BCE.
