Skinnydipping at Lake Pedder, Tasmania. In 1972, the Sepentine and Huon rivers were damed by the State’s Hydro Electric Commission with the result that the original Lake Pedder was submerged. The lake now has a surface area of 242 square kilometres, making it the second-largest lake in Tasmania (after Lake Gordon).

Sled dogs look on as Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, is trapped and crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea in Antartica in 1911. Shackelton pulled off a miraculous rescue of his entire crew.

16 year-old Jessica Watson returns to Sydney Harbour on 15 May 2010 after 210 days alone at sea. She was the youngest sailor to sail solo and non-stop around the world. Watson wrote a book about her adventure titled “True Spirit”, published by Hachette Australia in July 2010.

The Japanese ShinMaywa US-2, a short takeoff and landing amphibious aircraft, takes to the air. First introduced in 2007, the aircraft is used in air-sea rescue, surveillance, and another version, for aerial fire-fighting.
