The first photograph that includes people, taken in France in 1838. Because exposures in early photographs were so long, people were rarely motionless long enough to register on the negative. In this daguerreotype however, the shoe-shine boy and his customer (lower left) were sufficiently still to appear in the resulting photo. Source: aiioiiiyo.com.

In 1908, onlookers picnic near the wreck of the 275 foot, four-masted barque, Falls of Halladale, on the rocks off Peterborough, in Victoria, Australia. Due to a navigation error, the ship hit the rocks in a dense fog. However, the Captain and 29 crew all escaped safely to shore. Today, the wreck is a dive site only 30 meters offshore in 3-15 metres of water.
