Due to a navigation error, the ship hit the rocks in a dense fog. However, the Captain and 29 crew all escaped safely to shore. In adulthood, he stood 7 foot 7 inches tall (2.3 metres) and he weighed 201 kilograms (443 pounds). Sadly, Baptiste died of diphtheria a few weeks before his 40th birthday, in 1916.
