In 1977, at age 26, Robyn Davidson left from outside Alice Springs to walk west to the Indian Ocean, accompanied by four camels and a dog. After 9 months and 2,835 kilometres she finished the trek at Hamelin Pool, north of Geralton, WA. Rick Smolan accompanied Robyn on certain stages to photograph her journey for National Geographic. Lady Elliot Island is on the extreme SE tip of the Great Barrier Reef and about 40 nautical miles NE of Bundaberg, Queensland. it was built in1863 with a timber frame, clad with iron plates.
