Whang-od started tattooing under the tutelage of her father at the age of 15 and still uses ink made from pine-soot and water and a needle made from a thorn. She has no birth records but believes she is over 100. Whang-od has been issued a Philippines Postal ID with her birthday marked as 17 February 1917 – making her 105 next month.
